What Sewage Smell Actually Means
The smell of sewage in a home is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) and a mix of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by anaerobic bacteria decomposing organic waste. When these gases are present, the bacteria producing them are also present. A persistent odor after a sewage backup event is not just unpleasant. It is confirmation that bacterial contamination has not been fully addressed.
There are two broad causes of lingering sewage odor in Provo homes after a backup event:
- Incomplete cleanup: Porous materials that were not fully removed, such as carpet padding left under new carpet, drywall that was dried in place rather than removed, or subfloor material that absorbed sewage water and was not replaced.
- Secondary mold growth: Mold that colonized within the first 24 to 48 hours produces its own musty-earthy odor compounds. Mold behind drywall or under flooring cannot be seen but produces persistent odor for months.
What Does Not Work for Sewage Odor
Many Provo homeowners try several common approaches before calling a professional. Understanding why these fail helps explain what is actually required.
- Air fresheners and scented candles: These mask VOCs in the air temporarily. As soon as the fragrance dissipates, the sewage odor compounds remain. They do nothing for the source.
- Bleach mopping: Bleach evaporates quickly and has limited penetration into concrete or wood grain. It may reduce surface-level odor briefly but does not reach bacteria in wall cavities or subfloor assemblies.
- Ozone machines (rented units): Ozone generators can be temporarily effective at neutralizing airborne VOCs, but they do not penetrate porous materials where bacterial colonization is occurring. Consumer-grade units rented from hardware stores also pose respiratory risks if misused in occupied homes. They address the symptom, not the cause.
- Box fans for ventilation: Ventilating with fans without HEPA filtration moves contaminated air through the home and into adjacent spaces, potentially spreading odor-producing contamination to areas that were not originally affected.
What Actually Eliminates Sewage Odor
Source identification
We assess the affected area for residual contamination using moisture meters and visual inspection. If previous cleanup was incomplete, we identify which materials retain contamination. This sometimes requires removing sections of previously dried drywall to inspect wall cavities and insulation behind the panel.
Residual contaminated material removal
Any previously missed or inadequately treated porous materials are removed. This is the only permanent solution for odor coming from contaminated materials. No amount of surface treatment reaches bacteria colonizing the inside of a wall cavity or the bottom layer of a carpet padding assembly.
EPA-registered antimicrobial treatment
All remaining hard surfaces are treated with EPA-registered disinfectants at correct concentrations and dwell times. This kills the bacteria generating H2S and other odor-producing compounds at the surface level and in surface pores of concrete and grout.
HEPA air scrubbing with activated carbon filtration
HEPA air scrubbers fitted with activated carbon pre-filters capture both particulate pathogens and gaseous VOCs. Standard HEPA alone captures particles but not gases. The activated carbon layer adsorbs hydrogen sulfide and other odor compounds, removing them from the air rather than recirculating them.
HVAC duct assessment and treatment if needed
If sewage-contaminated air circulated through the HVAC system during or after the event, duct surfaces may harbor odor-producing contamination. This is most common in Provo homes with older forced-air systems where return air vents are positioned at floor level near basement entry points.
